At our May 2025 Prostate Forum meeting, Dr. Brian Wodlinger of Exact Imaging introduced us to micro-ultrasound — a powerful new imaging option that’s already changing how prostate cancer is detected and monitored.
Micro-ultrasound offers real-time, high-resolution imaging (70 microns) that allows doctors to see prostate cancers that conventional ultrasound and even MRI may miss. It’s already FDA-cleared, in use at many California urology centers (including UCLA, UCI, and Genesis Urology), and reimbursed under standard ultrasound codes.
Why It Matters:
Higher sensitivity than MRI for some cancers — especially small or MRI-invisible tumors
Fast, in-office use — no tunnel, no contrast agent, no delays
Supports targeted biopsy, active surveillance, and treatment follow-up
Training program ensures reliable interpretation by urologists
AI tools are on the way to support even more accurate image reading
Best of all, this technology is available now — and expanding fast.
